The tradition of carving pumpkins for Halloween, also known as jack-o'-lanterns, can be traced back to ancient Celtic rituals. Originally, turnips & potatoes were carved to ward off evil spirits. The Celts carved turnips for the holiday of Samhain, which is the precursor to modern Halloween. Samhain was a Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest season & the beginning of winter. It was believed to be a time when the boundary between the living & the dead was thin, & people would carve turnips with grotesque faces & place them in their windows or doorways to ward off malevolent spirits & welcome the spirits of deceased loved ones. When Irish immigrants brought this tradition to America in the 19th century, they discovered pumpkins, which were larger & easier to carve. Over time, the practice evolved into the pumpkin carving we know today. This year I made a limited edition of original Jack-o'-lanterns shaped like turnips . Made to look like traditional Jack-o'-lanterns these pumpkins look pretty cute. I made this turnip shaped lantern on the potter's wheel & decorated it by hand, cutting out a unique face design & arranging a stem & adding little sculptural details. Once dry the turnip was fired, I then sanded it, cleaned it & covered in glaze & various paints before firing again. The lantern really looks dramatic & magical with or without a tealight, but I will include a free one with your order so you could enjoy your purchase right away. This tealight holder can be placed on the window ledge, mantel, coffee table, or side table. It's a one-of-a-kind item, what you see in the main picture is what you will get. Measures about SAFETY FIRST: IF USING WITH A TEALIGHT, Do not touch the body of the lantern. it gets very hot. Let the lantern to cool after blowing the candle before moving it.
