Soapstone Female Seal

Description: Each sculpture I create, whether of stone or wood, is carved from a single piece of natural material. & each sculpture is a unique one-of-a-kind work of art. I often decide on the subject based on the size & shape of the rough material. The grain & color of the material has a direct impact on which side of the stone or wood I plan to make the front of the work. But it's not always easy to make that determination. Because wood & stone reveal unique colors & grain patterns at different layers as the material is removed, I never know for certain what the finished surface will look like until I do the final sanding & eventually seal the work with a clear protective coating usually a paste wax or oil finish. Whatever the final color or grain happens to be, it is that unique section of stone or wood that helps make each sculpture a one-of-a-kind work of art. Depending on the size & detail of a piece, I spend anywhere from 60 - 800 hours from beginning to end in the creative process of shaping & refining the sculpture. It is my enduring love of the process itself that gives me the patience to spend months on a particular sculpture. & it is that endless patience that finally produces a beautiful work of art. Many of my sculptures have won best-of-show awards during the past forty years, & most of the carvings I sold went to various states from the west coast to the east coast. Twice, I was fortunate enough to win the highest award the California Carver's Guild bestows at the annual Best-of-the-Best competition in Cambria, CA. I hope you enjoy my sculptural art.
