Paintings of flowers, animals, fish, vegetables, lucky images, events, such as Hina Matsuri. boys day, bean throwing day & New Year can be found. Japanese people rotate around the paintings to reflect the season, making a display to keep themselves in touch with the beauty of nature & yearly festivities, from within their own home. Japanese shikishi were traditionally attached to a hanging scroll & displayed in the tokonoma of a formal Japanese tatami mat room. Recently people do not have a tokonoma so some lovely frames for shikishi have become available. TAWARAYA SOTATSU Tawaraya Sotatsu (1570-1640) was a Japanese painter & designer of the Rinpa school. Sotatsu is best known for his decorations of calligraphic works by his partner Honami Koetsu (1558-1637) & his spectacular bybu folding screens, such as National Treasures Wind God & Thunder God & his painting of the Sekiya & Miotsukushi chapters from The Tale of Genji. He also made popular a technique called tarashikomi, in which a second layer of paint is applied before the first layer is dry. Wind God & Thunder God is a pair of two-folded screens made using ink & color on gold-foiled paper. It depicts Raijin & Fujin, the fearsome Japanese gods of weather. Japanese history is filled with devastating typhoons & storms that have wiped out communities & caused terrible damage.
