Also, many Otomi individuals still practice shamanism & hold pre-Hispanic beliefs such as Nagualism. Nagualism is tied to the belief found in many indigenous cultures in southern Mexico that a person upon being born acquires a close spiritual link to an animal, which lasts throughout the lives of both creatures. The person shows signs of whatever the animal's situation to include scratches & bruises if the animals get in fights, or illness if the animal is ill. The animal can help the person in difficult or dangerous situations. This is important to understand the iconography or design featured in their embroidery art, which presents animals. It is also important to highlight that the Otomi people have traditionally subsisted on maize, beans & squash. They have a close relationship with their environment. These beliefs & relation with the environment are featured in their art & their embroidery. Sometimes they also feature everyday life & ceremonies such as weddings.
