These shields are traditionally crafted from wood & decorated with black, white, & sometimes red pigments. The pattern on the shield is often associated with the bwadi bwa kifwebe society & serves as a protective emblem. While used for decoration today, these shields were originally important pieces of tribal weaponry & reflected social & spiritual beliefs. These shields are carved from one piece of wood. Sold as a set or individual. It is thought that the wooden African shield originated from the Tikar tribe in Cameroon.
