King thelred II, often known as the Unready, ruled England from 978 until 1016 during one of the most challenging periods in Anglo-Saxon history. Son of King Edgar & half-brother of Edward the Martyr, thelred inherited the throne as a child. His reign was dominated by renewed Viking invasions, including those led by Sweyn Forkbeard & later Cnut. The nickname the Unready derives from the Old English Unrd, meaning poorly advised, rather than being unprepared. Despite introducing legal reforms & attempting to strengthen royal government, the growing Viking threat overwhelmed England. His reign ultimately marked the beginning of the end for the House of Wessex, though his descendants would later return to the throne through Edward the Confessor.
