King Edward the Elder (reigned 899-924) was one of the most important yet often overlooked rulers in English history. The eldest son of Alfred the Great, Edward inherited the Kingdom of Wessex following his father's death & continued the struggle against the Viking kingdoms that occupied much of England. Working closely with his formidable sister, thelfld, he reconquered vast areas of Danish-held territory through a series of successful military campaigns & the construction of fortified burhs (defensive towns). By the end of his reign, Edward controlled almost all of England south of the River Humber, laying the essential foundations for the creation of a united English kingdom. His achievements made it possible for his son, King thelstan, to become the first ruler recognised as King of all England. Although frequently overshadowed by both his famous father & son, Edward the Elder was one of the architects of medieval England & a key figure in the rise of the House of Wessex.
