A 23kg bag of washed sharp sand, also sold as grit sand or concreting sand. It has a coarse gritty texture from ground quartz rock, which is what makes it the right sand for structural work rather than a soft bricklaying sand. Mix it with cement and aggregate for concrete, use it as the bedding layer under block paving and flags, screed it for flooring, or run it as a protective bed around underground cables, water pipes and ground source heating ducts. It also works as a soil conditioner, forked through heavy clay to open up the structure and improve drainage, or blended into potting compost. Being washed it is low in salts and clay fines, so it mixes cleanly and does not stain. Supplied in a handleable 23kg poly bag rather than a bulk bag, which suits small jobs and topping up part way through a project.
