Kitchen Ideas from the uFurnish.com Home Awards

Deirdre Mc Gettrick
8th of January

The kitchen is the heart of any home, whatever its size. It’s where we gather to prepare meals and make our all-important teas and coffees and is usually a hub for chats with family and friends. Aside from this social purpose, no matter what culinary skills you possess, the kitchen also needs to be both functional and provide ample storage for all those appliances integral to its central purpose. If you are looking at a kitchen renovation, why not get inspired with our uFurnish.com Home Awards entrants’ kitchen design ideas?

Explore the Entrants' Rooms

Deciding to embark on a kitchen makeover can seem rather overwhelming - as well as potentially costly! However, our talented 2025 Home Awards entrants really proved that with a bit of creativity, you can transform this important room, on either a small budget or a large one, whatever your decorating style. We saw some fantastic kitchen layouts, both modern and traditional (and often with a twist!), with all sorts of colour palettes, from monochromes to pastels to bold colours, as well as some statement appliances.

Our category winner, Roxanne Fregona (@vincent_the_house), cleverly brought nature into this relatively modest space, without a full-blown extension, using Crittall-style bifold doors that lead onto the garden, adding both light and interest to the room. The neutral cabinets are offset with a strong coloured tile feature behind the cooker and a foliage-inspired wallpaper wall behind the eating area. With careful thought, Roxanne reconfigured the layout to provide sufficient preparation space without compromising the overall flow of the kitchen, also including an adorable dog nook!

In contrast, one of our other finalists, Amanda Malone (@the_decor_addict), used two strong, contrasting colours for her cabinetry along with patterned wallpaper and a neutral work surface and splashback. The island unit incorporates a breakfast bar and storage has really been optimised, even into the corner. Vintage-style lighting, a beautiful parquet floor and select accessories complete this lovely look.

Another finalist, Amy Jewitt (@thegranarybarnfarm), has taken this big open plan space and turned it into a welcoming kitchen, dining and seating area. The wooden beams have been embraced as part of the design, making use of a wooden dining table, wooden bar stools, a wooden mirror surround and a wooden floor with soft blue paintwork on the cabinets and neutrals for the accessories such as the rug and table runner. Dried plants bring further interest around the whole room, along with neutral wall art to complement the overall design.

Carla Elliman (@carlaelliman) also joined the other finalists with a more significant makeover, turning a former dining room into the kitchen and creating a utility room out of the old one. This transformation really makes use of the natural light and uses bold contrasting colours for the units and lighting with a light work surface and white walls to offset the strong tones. The utility is hidden behind cabinet doors to allow the kitchen to shine when entertaining, with a separate open plan dining area for guests but retaining a small breakfast bar as well.

Finally, Natasha Landers (@untillemonsrsweet) took a very different approach with this industrial and vintage theme, along with a distressed metallic splashback instead of tiling and using a combination of dark grey cabinets and a yellow palette with accents of colourful coordinated storage. The Crittall-style windows really offset this incredible look whilst also letting in natural light.

How to apply these styles in your home

Deciding what kitchen style you would like will depend on some key factors, including the age and overall style of your home, the size of the existing room, what your culinary ambitions are (be honest!) and… your budget. Whether you want to go all out on a full refurb or are looking at giving your existing kitchen a modest makeover, think about how you plan to use the room. Kitchens are generally multipurpose, needing to allow for:

1. Cooking – how much and how often do you cook
- If you entertain a lot, you need more equipment
- Even if it’s largely for the family does your food storage, prep, cooking and clearing up layout flow well?

2. Storage – make sure you have thought about the different types
- Food – this includes pantry goods, the fridge and freezer
- Pots & pans – these can be bulky so do you have enough room?
- Cooking implements – from chopping boards and knives to bowls and tins, it all needs a home!

3. Laundry – we all need to do this so convenience is important but ideally not at the expense of the look of your lovely new kitchen
- Do you have room for a utility room (however small)?
- Can you fit in a washer and dryer or do you need to compromise?
- Will your new design have space for folding laundry?

4. Dining – how much space you require ties in with both your day to day and entertaining needs
- Will a “breakfast bar” suffice for everyday usage?
- Do you have space to incorporate a dining area?

Colour is usually high on a kitchen design agenda and there are many ways to incorporate that into your update – whether it’s your cabinets, tiles, walls, ceiling, window treatments or floor, there are ample opportunities to find your ideal colour scheme. Tiling can not only introduce colour but also bring patterns and shapes into your overall design – you might have a statement appliance you want to bring attention to that could inspire this approach. Also, don’t forget that switching up accessories, whether potted plants, storage receptacles or artwork, can really make a difference.

Work with what you have in terms of existing beams or stone and window styles to optimise the look with what you might not be able to change. Lighting can make a dramatic difference whether you are looking at making the most of natural light or opting for statement chandeliers or wall lights, this will be a key component of your update. Whilst island units were a common theme in this year’s Home Awards, if you don’t have the space or budget for a permanent island, have you thought about a butcher’s block? These can be moved around your space to bring additional flexibility to your layout. Whatever your kitchen renovation ambitions, let uFurnish.com help you discover the items and styles across all budgets to bring your project to life.
