Anglia, Scotia et Hibernia Map This is a reproduction of the 1623 Gerard Mercator map of Great Britain & Ireland. This landmark & highly decorative map by Mercator first appeared in Part 3 of his atlas published in Duisburg in 1595. in 1604 the plates were sold to Jodocus Hondius & the map was issued, without change, in the Mercator-Hondius Atlases published in Amsterdam until 1630. The map depicts England, Scotland & Ireland. Topographical features are shown & cities, towns, islands, mountains, & water routes are identified. Counties are named in the tables to the right & left. Gerard Mercator is considered the greatest name in geographical science after Ptolemy & produced the most accurate & current maps of his day. He was the first to choose Atlas as the name for a collection of maps. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Mercator's maps were mostly original work - drawn & engraved by him. This handsome map reflects Mercator's abilities, in beautiful Renaissance style, as both artist & scientist.
