Yakisugi ( ) is a traditional Japanese method of preserving wood. Yaki means to heat with fire & sugi is cypress. in the West it is referred to as burnt wood veneer & also known as shou sugi ban ( ) which uses the same kanji characters but an incorrect pronunciation. The ban character means table. By slightly carbonizing the surface of the wood without burning the entire piece, the wood becomes impermeable through carbonization & is therefore more resistant.
