How it's made: Bronze metal powder is mixed with a resin to make the Bronze Resin material, which has the appearance of Foundry Bronze metal. This process creates a material that is more affordable & lightweight. Regrettably, Hoegy had passed away before his commission was initiated. However, I had access to numerous photographs of him in various poses, which allowed me to study his expressions & form closely. I also learned about his behaviour at home with his family. Together with his owners, I decided on the most fitting pose for him & began sculpting Hoegy in clay. Once the sculpture was complete, a rubber mould was created, incorporating 'keys' to ensure accurate alignment. To safeguard the mould & provide support during the casting process, a fibreglass shell was then applied over it. Tanya Russell has become well known over the last 30 years for her life-like & vibrant animal sculptures, & her abstract figurative work. For Tanya her practice is not only about capturing the animals she sculpts with marks & movement. It's about people's relationships with those animals & their welfare.
