For your cabinet of curiosities: a beautifully displayed pair of absolutely gigantic fighting beetles from Sumatra & East Java, Indonesia. Certain to be a fascinating curiosity for naturalists & of great interest to those with an interest in insect collection & entomology. The sturdy beetle on the left is commonly called a Rhinoceros beetle & is scientifically named as Xylotrupes Gideon sumatrensis. It is a species of large scarab beetle belonging to the subfamily Dynastinae & is known for its role in insect fighting in Thailand. The impressive beetle on the right is a particularly beautiful species of stag beetle; the scientific name is Odontolabis lacordairei. Both are male examples of each species. The rhinoceros beetle measures approximately 3.25 inches (8 cm) long & the stage beetle measures approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) long. The attractive display is a custom design with a round glass globe bell cover & a natural wood base. The base is supported by 3 wooden peg feet. The beetles are mounted upright on an nice natural cork pattern platform easel. Hidden on the back of the easel is a small mounted steel receptacle holding a small cotton ball treated with eucalyptus oil to help deter the interest of unwanted pests known to destroy mounted insects - i.e. carpet beetles, coddling moths, etc. The entire display stands just over 7 inches (18 cm) tall & the glass globe has a diameter of approximately 6 inches (15 cm).
