INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ARTWORK Year Created : 2013 Place Created : Thunder Bay, Ontario I created this art piece while I was living in Thunder Bay from 2012 to 2013. Between these years, I was pursuing my teaching certificate at Lakehead University. Living in Thunder Bay allowed me to explore Native American culture in Canada a little more deeply, & inspired this artwork. While I had previously studied Native American art & culture in Canada while completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Toronto from 2007 to 2012 as I took several Indigenous Art courses, visiting Thunder Bay made me fall in love with Indigenous art all over again. I fell in love with the beautiful bold designs that captivate the senses in so many Native American paintings & sculptures, as well as the use of animals as symbols. As an artist, it was not enough for me to passively view Native American art & design in various galleries & art collections while I was in Thunder Bay. I knew I had to become involved in the process of creating. Symbols in Native American Art: Bear : The symbol of a bear signifies protection, courage, physical strength & leadership. Indigenous peoples use the symbol of a bear to convey authority & seeing the symbol of a bear means that you will have good tidings. Crow : The symbol of a crow signifies wisdom. Some tribes believed that the crow had the power to talk & was one of the wisest birds. Turtle : The turtle is a sacred figure in Native American symbolism. The turtle symbolizes Mother Earth. A symbol of a turtle signifies good health & a long life. Turtles, especially turtles in the wild are known to live for up to 150 years. in fact, the turtles discovered by Darwin are still alive to this day. The hard shell of the turtle symbolizes perseverance & protection. Fish : The symbol of the fish signifies water & the flow of life from the Earth's core to the surface.
