Who doesn’t love a luxury bathroom? However, it’s often only when we go away that we encounter something spectacular, though styles will vary depending on whether you are staying in a sleek hotel or a cosy cottage. So why is it that our own bathrooms, despite the endless bathroom ideas available, often fail to deliver that same wow factor?
This room gets a lot of use, so it can understandably be cluttered and a bit tired, but it doesn’t have to be that way as this year’s talented uFurnish.com Home Awards entrants demonstrated. Whatever bathroom design and bathroom furniture ideas you are looking for, whether for a small bathroom, on a budget or luxury bathroom décor ideas, take a look at how you can really up the ante on your bathroom renovation.

Bathrooms do need to be functional but that doesn’t always mean neutral, ultra-modern spaces – though if this is what you love, go for it! The age and style of your abode often dictate the size of your bathroom and whether you can have a separate bath and shower or need to be creative in finding the right compromise. Bathroom renovations can often seem daunting, especially with small spaces or when you start speculating on costs, but as the talented finalists for our Home Awards demonstrated, there are many ways to be spectacular!
This year’s category winner, Anouska Lancaster (@noushka_design), has created a beautiful vibrant space using strong colours and wallpaper, upcycling vintage furniture, well-placed art and adding delightful patterned basins. The free-standing bath is painted in a bespoke pink and stands in front of the window to bring the outside in with the beautiful view beyond.

Another finalist, Serena Dobson (@renovating_hillside_house), utilised a much more muted palette of creams and browns but also included the lovely countryside view from the window, placing the bath in front. We might not all have such a vista but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a different kind of statement!

Estelle Bilson (@70shousemanchester) proved that with some imagination you don’t need a big budget to transform a space with her disco-ball themed bathroom using a bargain 1970s suite from eBay.

Meanwhile, another finalist, Frederique Pope (@interiorswithattitude) used bold colour contrasts, floor details and a quirky duck accessory, definitely proving that not all bathrooms have to be white!

The last of our finalists, Amanda Malone (@the_decor_addict), opted for a “modern Victorian” look including panelling and William Morris wallpaper to create this lovely space.

Styles seen across Entrants' Rooms
This year’s awards entrants proved that there is no right or wrong way when it comes to the use of colour in our bathrooms. Whilst our loos, basins, baths and showers are often white (though they don’t have to be!), tiles, flooring, wall and window coverings can be as bold or muted as you like. That said, overall there was a trend of using eye-catching colour and pattern combinations and upcycling was a standout theme.

What we love at uFurnish.com
How you create your dream bathroom does need to be founded on some practicality. Firstly, how big is the space as this will determine whether you can have a separate shower and bath or if you need to find a clever compromise. Next, think carefully about the placement of your bathroom items. If you can work with your existing plumbing and drainage that will help to keep costs down, but you also need to think about the flow of the room, so consider:
1. Where will doors (shower and otherwise) open?
2. Is there adequate clearance around your loo?
3. How far are your towels from where they will be needed?
4. Have you made sure you have sufficient storage for all your toiletries?
5. What mirrors do you need and where should these be placed?
Once you have planned your layout, think about the style and colour scheme. Whether you prefer vintage or modern or some combination of the two is a good first step, but this should be in the context of the overall style of your home as otherwise your freshly minted makeover might be jarring! Your colour palette should be the next decision and don’t forget the importance here of flooring, tiling, lighting and wall and window coverings as these will all combine for the finished article. Colour choices are often made easier if you have a statement item that you want to incorporate, whether a piece of furniture, art or light fitting, so be sure to take inspiration from your accessories.
