The one-handed latch means you can open and lock it while carrying a wriggling toddler or armful of laundry. No base bar to trip over, either. The screw-fit mounting makes it secure enough for the top of the stairs (the hardware drills into the wall or bannister for a solid fix). That 2-way swing is handy when you've got furniture or tight corners on either side of the opening. The one-handed latch clicks open and locks again with a simple press and lift, so you don't need both hands free to get through.
