Repetition of shapes, & adapting the natural geometric form of the plant (two fundamental design theories emphasized during the Arts & Crafts movement), the plant was rendered into a conventionalized design. Balance & repetition create a simple form. As embroidered, the spiderwort design is worked using the satin stitch, long & short stitch, stem stitch & French knots. An excellent project for both the beginner & skilled embroider the spiderwort design is also available stenciled with outlining in stem stitch, with French knots worked at the top of the stems, & in the center of the flowers. Available on Natural Linen, with either white or red pearl cotton for the petals, soft yellow for the centers of the flower, & either evergreen or deep sage pearl cotton thread for the foliage, the completed project creates an aesthetic contrast, allowing its placement within many interior color palettes. Additional colors that work well with this design include periwinkle blue & lilac (the other naturally occurring colors for the spiderwort).
